Back in 1989 I bought a cassingle (yes, a cassingle) of Indio's "Hard Sun". The track was fantastic, but it pretty much disappeared from the face of the earth. Thing is, it apparently didn't. Eddie Vedder heard the track, too. Now he's covering it for the new movie Into the Wild. No offense to Mr. Vedder, but his version doesn't hold a candle to the original. I'd love to tell you to go pick up the old Indio CD - by the way, like Lightning Seeds and M, Indio was a band with exactly one member, a guy name Gordon Peterson - but if you want the Big Harvest CD, you'd better take out a loan...the long out-of-print CD is going for $100 up. But it's free to listen to "Hard Sun" right here right now...

Thank you, thank you, thank you! It has been driving me MAD because I KNEW I remembered this song that everyone just calls the "new Eddie Vedder song". So nice to hear the original after lo these many years. Cheers!
I go to a used record store every Saturday the next town over here in Wisconsin. I had seen this album, on vinyl, in the bins for a couple years. Sealed. Finally, curiosity got the best of me and I pulled it out of the rack and looked at the back cover. Imagine my surprise to see Vinny Colaiuta playing drums. And to find Joni Mitchell and Larry Klien on it too. I bought it.
Then, I got the album home and put it on. Sure sounded 1989 to me with the huge snare drum and production. Then, came the last song on side 1. I said to myself, "Hey! I know this song! Where do I know this song from?"
Sure enough, it finally came to me. This is the song that Eddie Vedder has all over the radio right now. How COOL!! And I agree with the long ago above commenter, Gordon's version is much better.
I had an ongoing argument with my brother about this song on into the wild. He said all songs were originals by vedder and i said no im sure i know this song from somewhere else... Because how did i know the lyrics when i hadn't seen into the wild before?? Good song though ey... Thanks for writing something about this one. I remember the song from when i was young considering i was only 3 when the original came out.
I love being right so thanks heaps.
Andy
